Florida Post 15 has developed a plan to reach out to those most in need of support.
Gordon M. Crothers American Legion Post 15 in Dade City, Fla., has developed a strategic plan for making Buddy Checks on its members. But Post 15 Adjutant Rob McGregor is quick to admit the approach didn鈥檛 come from his own brainstorming.
Rather, it鈥檚 more along the lines of 鈥渋mitation is the sincerest form of flattery.鈥
McGregor said he was motivated to improve the post鈥檚 Buddy Check efforts after seeing how American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 was reaching out to its own members.
鈥淭he Auxiliary really kind of kicked me into gear to do something,鈥 McGregor said. 鈥淭hey sent out emails, and some emails weren鈥檛 coming back. So then they were trying some phone calls. And finally, they sent out a letter with a self-addressed envelope with a note that said, 鈥榃e鈥檙e trying to reach you. Is this a good address?鈥欌 They used that multi-prong approach, and I liked that. So I tried to do the same thing on our side.鈥
So now, Post 15 makes Buddy Checks using what McGregor calls a 鈥渢riage鈥 approach. He uses Mailchimp to send out emails with a brief survey, asking if members are doing well, doing OK, would like a call from the post or need help locating resources or support.
From that, the post then trims down the list of potential Buddy Check recipients. 鈥淚t鈥檚 who do we need to reach out to the most,鈥 McGregor said. 鈥淲ho are we not getting responses from? Let鈥檚 focus on the people we鈥檙e not hearing back from at all.
鈥淎nd to whittle it down even further, when we run the membership roster, I鈥檓 looking at these people that have all these continuous years (of membership), but we haven鈥檛 heard from them. And we鈥檙e checking on those people first. We鈥檙e doing this in phased approach to focus on those that might be most at need.鈥
McGregor said making Buddy Checks is one of the reasons why 海角社区 exists. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 the core of what we do: look out for each other,鈥 he said. 鈥淢y post has always sent people to visit older members that are sick at home and can鈥檛 come to the post anymore. It鈥檚 just to check on them and see how they鈥檙e doing.鈥
And those Buddy Checks also fall under the Legion鈥檚 most important mission: its veteran suicide prevention program. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 part of why we鈥檙e doing this,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ne of the (survey) questions is, 鈥楬ey, do you need somebody to reach out?鈥 That鈥檚 the intent of that question. We know that veterans will self-isolate. Let鈥檚 weed down to the ones who have withdrawn and make sure they鈥檙e doing OK. That鈥檚 part of the whole Be the One thing. It鈥檚 asking the question, 鈥楢re you all right?鈥欌
